Delivering Quality in Primary Care

Early in 2010 a series of events were held across Scotland, including one in Aberdeen, to review the contribution Primary Care makes to the NHS in Scotland.  These events gave a platform for facilitated discussion based around quality and how Primary Care supports particular patient groups. In an environment of tight financial constraints these discussions sought to identify what opportunities and challenges would emerge for Primary Care going forward and what would need to be done to realise and overcome these. The outcome of these events has been distilled within the recently published "Delivering Quality in Primary Care".  This, as stated by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, will be the framework for the development of Primary Care in Scotland over the next five years, as part of the Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHS Scotland.

"Delivering Quality in Primary Care" and the Scottish impact of the DoH White Paper "Liberating the NHS" are key drivers for change within Primary Care in Scotland.  This is potentially a very exciting opportunity for us locally in NHS Grampian to contribute positively to the local health system and may provide us with the potential to 'pilot' National projects within the context of seeking new ways to operate within the system from a Primary Care perspective.  This is driven within the context of "The Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHS Scotland".

The key strands of work to concentrate upon are:

  • Anticipatory care
  • Care pathways
  • Access
  • Referral management
  • Quality assurance across all independent contractor services
  • Communication both between contractor services and between primary and secondary care

Workshop

To enable the review of the Delivering Quality in Primary Care strategic direction and the resulting development of an implementation template, NHS Grampian's Primary Care Integrated Management Group have commissioned a workshop.  The primary tasks of the workshop are:

  • Develop an implementation plan for Delivering Quality in Primary Care, embedding this within the developing NHS Grampian strategic plans.
  • Engage all partners to consider and plan for the challenging future in an integrated way, within the Health and Care system in Grampian.
  • To discuss Primary Care services future role, function and contribution to the local and national agenda.
