Evaluation Advice within NHS Grampian
It is appreciated that clinicians across NHS Grampian are keen to assess the quality of the care they provide and evaluative activity is already taking place. However, there are colleagues and teams within NHS Grampian who have a particular interest in evaluation who can work with health professionals to offer advice with the development of evaluation plans - they are named within the figure below. Further information regarding their interest in evaluation is listed below. These colleagues and teams are also able to access advice from academic colleagues based within Aberdeen University who have an interest in evaluation.
NHS Grampian Clinical Librarian
The NHS Grampian Clinical Librarian covers all of Grampian and can support evaluation through:
- Undertaking literature searching to help clarify the currently available evidence base with respect to a given form of care
- Undertaking literature searching to help identify the methods employed by colleagues elsewhere who have undertaken evaluations with respect to a given form of care
- Training in search skills for individuals or groups who want to perform literature searches as part of the service change process

NHS Grampian Clinical Effectiveness Team
The Clinical Effectiveness Team is part of the Clinical Governance & Risk Management Unit. Clinical Effectiveness Facilitators cover each of the operational sectors within NHS Grampian (the three Community Health Partnerships, Mental Health and Learning Disability Services and the Acute Sector).
The Clinical Effectiveness Team can support evaluation through:
- General project management advice
- Guidance on project methodology
- Data collection tool design and development
- Database/spreadsheet design
- Data analysis
- Report writing advice
- Advice on change management
- Presentation advice

NHS Grampian Health Intelligence Team
The primary function of the Health Intelligence Team is to provide and translate health service information into actionable evidence to support a culture of knowledge-based planning and decision-making. There is a Health Intelligence Lead for each of the operational sectors within NHS Grampian.
The Health Intelligence Team can support evaluation through:
- Having a thorough knowledge of routinely available data and providing advice on its strengths and weaknesses
- Undertaking quantitative and qualitative data and statistical analysis
- Interpreting results in context
- Undertaking work to model the possible impact of service change

NHS Grampian Public Health and Planning Directorate
The Public Health and Planning Directorate collaborates with colleagues within and outwith the health service to improve population health. The Directorate has established a Health Care Team to work with clinical, managerial and planning colleagues in planning and developing health services. Input to evaluation is seen as a vital part of this function in order to assess robustly the impact of service change.
The Health Promotion Team within the Public Health and Planning Directorate is concerned with supporting initiatives to encourage our population to adopt a healthier lifestyle. In addition, the Team works with local authorities and other relevant partners to help create healthy local environments and develop community capacities (i.e. community development activities) which are health enhancing. The Team also works to encourage the development of local Public Health policy. The Team is keen to support the evaluation of health promotion initiatives.
The Public Health and Planning Directorate can support evaluation through:
- Taking a whole system perspective on the planning of evaluations - can assist in identifying opportunities for wider evaluation linking across operational sectors
- Providing advice on evaluation study design and outcome measures, based upon familiarity with a broad range of methodological approaches and experience of contributing to evaluations
- Providing a Public Health perspective on the interpretation of evaluation findings

NHS Grampian Research and Development Team
The Research and Development (R&D) Team is responsible for promoting and managing all research (non-commercial and commercial) involving NHS Grampian.
The R&D Team can support evaluation through:
- Assisting with ethics and research governance needs
- Being able to direct those undertaking evaluations to other colleagues conducting similar work through consulting their register of research projects
- Access to statistical support
- Advice regarding funding opportunities
