Aberdeen City Council and NHS Grampian have invested in joint funded posts for a number of years. Initially these posts were intended to lead on the implementation of Health Promoting Schools. Two health improvement officers (HIO) were appointed in 2004/5 to continue this work. Although the role has changed slightly over the years, the two HIOs offer support to schools on all aspects of health and wellbeing.
The HIOs support a network of Health Promoting School co-ordinators and up to date information, both national and local, is disseminated via this network. If you would like to be added to the distribution list to receive updates please contact your HIO.
In addition to this, a Health Promoting Schools GLOW page is available. The GLOW page is kept up-to-date with information about new resources, presentations, support services and examples of good practice.
In 1998, ten Health Promoting School packs were produced - Becoming a Health Promoting School Core Pack and nine health topic packs. Every school in Grampian was issued with these ten packs.
The nine health topic packs recommend a 'whole school approach' to drugs, alcohol, smoking, food and health, mental health, HIV and sexual health, physical activity, accident prevention and oral health and focus on the formal curriculum, informal curriculum and links with the wider community.
These packs are currently being updated in line with Curriculum for Excellence. Completed packs are available on GLOW.
