NHS Grampian Public Health provides training for professionals in order to raise awareness and/or develop knowledge and skills in a range of health improvement topics.
The training is provided in a variety of locations across Grampian, on a single agency and a multi agency basis.
The programmes delivered are certified by NHS Grampian. The courses are of variable duration from three hours to two days, and can be adapted to the needs of specific client groups through discussion. All the training courses are monitored and post course evaluation is undertaken for each course.

'Improving Health: Developing Effective Practice' is a credit-rated short course, currently running in Grampian with local trainers.
The course was developed and is supported by NHS Health Scotland and is accredited by Robert Gordon's University.
Aims
The aim of this course is to increase your confidence in promoting health, by providing a framework that will help you to reflect on practice and develop effective practice.
What is the course about?
The course deals with 7 main themes:
1) Exploring health and health promotion
2) The policy context for health promotion
3) Promoting health with individuals
4) Promoting health with communities
5) Needs assessment
6) Planning and evaluating an intervention
7) Identifying local resources

Providing Stop Smoking Support
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to deliver brief advice and stop-smoking support, either in groups or on an individual basis.

Raising the Issue of Smoking
This exciting new course has been designed using a blended approach, combining e-learning with face-to-face training. It is a short, easily accessible course and participants will receive a certificate of completion when they successfully complete the course.
Participants will gain an awareness of the purpose, benefits and process of raising the issue of smoking and delivering brief advice. It also covers knowledge around tobacco, smoking and health, communication skills and how to refer people to local stop smoking services for support.

Confidence to Cook (C2Cook) flyer
Aims to address issues of confidence and skills in preparing food. Sessions are delivered either in the community training kitchen within Summerhill Adult Education Centre in Aberdeen or in identified areas in the wider community. Sessions are planned in consultation with participants to ensure individual objectives are met. Training is delivered by Health Information Assistants (HIAs) or community based trained workers. Training for Trainers (T4T's)
Delivered to identified workers who hold a current food hygiene handling certificate, and are in a position to influence behaviour and eating habits of the client group they work with. Sessions are delivered in conjunction with community dietetics and public health specialists with a strong emphasis on practical food skills. Following training, delegates receive a copy of the C2Cook pack & are empowered to deliver food skills. Scottish Mental Health First Aid
This 2-day course introduces candidates to mental health and mental illness, (anxiety, depression and psychosis) and presents them with a helping model which can be used to help a mentally unwell person to get the right sort of help while doing no harm in the process. The course is shown to: improve mental health literacy, reduce stigmatising attitudes and enhance consensus with mental health professionals. Promoting Mental Health Improvement (Introductory)
A 1 day course which introduces the concept of Mental Health Improvement and its Evaluation can be delivered. Candidates will be introduced to the Mental health Improvement Evidence and Practice booklets which are produced by Health Scotland and which are important for Implementing the Mental Health Improvement Framework for Grampian 2006-8.
Mental Health Promotion - Evidence and Practice (Advanced)
This is a 2 day course useful for practitioners, who will plan, deliver and lead mental health promotion interventions.
Stress Awareness Workshop
Duration: 1.5 hours (inc comfort break)
Suitable for Young adults upwards
Description: Workshop/presentation aimed at raising awareness of the causes, effects, process and signs/symptoms of stress. Personal stress reduction/control coping skills are also highlighted.
Relaxation Workshop
Duration: 1.5 hours (inc comfort break)
Suitable for Young adults upwards
Description: A mainly practical workshop (75%), allowing participants to experience a range of relaxation methods. The stress/relaxation response, human performance curve and benefits of regular practice are also highlighted.
Relaxation Facilitator's Training
Duration: Two training sessions: 1st = 2 hours, 2nd = TBA depending upon participant numbers attending.
Suitable for those working with clients (group or individual) where the teaching of relaxation skills would be of benefit
Description: Programme content provides participants with the skills required to facilitate relaxation training. Participants are required to 'home practice' a variety of relaxation methods and record their experience. A facilitator skills assessment is conducted during the second session.
Promoting Mental Health - Raising Awareness
Duration: one day
Suitable for those working at both strategic and operational levels in a range of sectors and settings
Description: Programme content looks at the concept of mental health promotion, its role in well-being maintenance and provides information regarding effective initiatives. Mental health promoting activities along with monitoring and evaluation methods are also highlighted.
Keepin' it 2 gether
Duration: two school periods (1 hour 40 minutes)
Suitable for Young people aged 15 to 18
Description: Workshop aimed at raising awareness of the causes, effects, process and signs/symptoms of stress. Exam stress is employed as a working example of how a range of coping skills (inc. Dr. Williams '5 Areas' Cognitive Behavioural approach) can be applied for stress reduction and control.
